The Minnesota Department of Transportation recently announced a full slate of summer road construction projects, which did include two large Northland projects of note.

Carlton County, the Atkinson Bridge at I-35 will go through a redecking project and various repairs.

Also, the infamous Twin Ports Interchange Project will continue in Duluth this year and beyond. That massive undertaking involves the reconstruction of the I-35/I-535/Hwy 53 interchange with the goal of improving safety in multiple ways.

Of course, as history has proven, there will be several other projects that pop up across the Northland that will impact motorists. This week, the Minnesota Department of Transportation notified the public of one such project that will be getting underway in the Gary New Duluth area.

MnDOT says that contractors will start construction on Highway 23 between Gary New Duluth and Perch Lake on Monday, May 15. This fairly lengthy project includes 1.4 miles of pavement replacement, culvert work, guardrails, and ADA pedestrian ramps.

Motorists traveling through the area can expect traffic to be reduced to one lane for the duration of the project, which will be controlled by a temporary signal system.

Work is expected to last through Saturday, August 12. MnDOT notes that following the project, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will be completing work at Perch Lake. That work will also require signal-controlled single-lane traffic.

Please drive with patience and caution around all road construction projects throughout the year as there are often city workers out in the area and they are vulnerable to passing traffic.
