It wasn't long ago that I shared the news that the Miller Hill Mall was celebrating the opening of JD Sports, bringing the global sports fashion retailer to the Northland for the first time.

That was good news for shoppers in the area, and now, more good news has arrived that will have an impact on the holiday shopping season.

Miller Hill Mall has announced that another national retailer is coming to the Fountain Court, and this one is aimed squarely at families with young children. Construction is already underway, with an opening planned for this fall.

Carter's To Open New Location In Duluth

Carter's, the nationally recognized children's apparel and accessories retailer, will be joining the Miller Hill Mall lineup this fall. The brand carries a wide selection of clothing, essentials, and accessories for babies and young children, and, according to the mall, it's one Northland shoppers have been asking for.

That certainly makes sense since, for parents and grandparents in the Duluth area, the nearest Carter's locations have all required a significant drive south, with stores in St. Cloud, Coon Rapids, Roseville, and at outlet centers in Albertville and Eagan.

Having a dedicated Carter's location right here in Duluth is the kind of addition that will add convenience for local families and provide another place to shop in time for the upcoming holiday season, as the mall expects the store to open this fall.

A Brand With More Than 160 Years Behind It

Carter's isn't a brand that needs much of an introduction to anyone who has raised a child in the last several decades; it's a brand my kids wore at times growing up, it does have an interesting history.

The company was founded in 1865 by William Carter, an English immigrant who started the William Carter Company in Needham, Massachusetts — reportedly beginning by knitting mittens in his own kitchen. What grew from that start is now North America's largest branded marketer of apparel exclusively for babies and young children, with more than 1,200 stores across the United States.

The brand is best known for its onesies, sleepwear, and everyday essentials ranging from newborn through kids size 14, with babies and toddlers making up the heart of the business.

In 2005, Carter's made a major move by acquiring OshKosh B'gosh for $312 million, adding one of the most iconic names in children's clothing to its family of brands. Carter's also sells exclusive product lines through Target, Walmart, and Amazon — meaning there's a reasonable chance Carter's products are already a regular part of your household, even if you've never walked into a standalone store.

Reports indicate the brand currently has around seven locations across Minnesota, all of them concentrated in the Twin Cities metro and surrounding areas. The Miller Hill Mall location will be the first in Northern Minnesota.

What To Expect This Fall

The new Carter's will be located in the Fountain Court at Miller Hill Mall, with construction currently underway and the fall opening planned. The new store will carry the full Carter's range of clothing, accessories, and essentials for babies and young children.
