A drug overdose death incident in March has led to homicide charges for a Superior May. The accused - George Phillip Nord, Jr. - made his initial court appearance and was arraigned on the charges on May 10 in Douglas County Court.

According to the Douglas County Jail roster and the details shared in the article in the Superior Telegram [paywall], the felony charges being levied at the 35-year old Nord include being "party to first-degree reckless homicide, possession of narcotic drugs, possession of methamphetamine, six counts of bail jumping, and two misdemeanor bail jumping charges".

The drug overdose death happened on March 21. The Medical Examiner determined that "the cause of death was attributed to the effects of fentanyl".  At the scene, police investigators discovered numerous signs of drug use - including paraphernalia, a computer laptop, and cellphone.

It's the cellphone that led authorities to Nord.

After obtaining a search warrant, the police went through messages and calls on the cellphone:

"According to the complaint, the victim messages Nord at 10:12 PM March 20 saying she had cash and they exchanged messages to set up a drug transaction and a meeting. The victim made an $80 payment via Cash App to Nord at 11:01 PM that night."

Following the transaction, authorities uncovered one last conversation between Nord and the victim: "The last message from the victim to Nord was sent at 11:56 PM [saying] 'Much appreciated my good man good to meet you so much appreciated and good to meet your prerrt mnd (sic)'".

A continued investigation led to the authorities placing Nord under arrest after he made an appearance for a different case at the Douglas County Courthouse on May 1.  According to the police report, Nord had drugs on his person at the time of his arrest an court appearance - including fentanyl and methamphetamine.

During questioning, Nord "reportedly" admitted to a role in the evenings drug deal.  The Telegram shares that:

"Nord reportedly admitted that on the night of the victim's death, he brought her in the car with him and introduced her to his source.  Nord told [the interviewing police officer] that the victim paid him $80 and he gave that to his source, who have the drugs to the victim. The victim 'broke off' some of the drugs for the Superior man [Nord]."

Nord also admitted to the authorities what the drug being dealt was. When the police "asked if the drug was fentanyl", Nord responded "you can't get nothing but".

Following the initial arraignment court appearance, Nord's next time in court will be June 12. If convicted, he faces some serious penalties. The maximum penalty for the homicide charge is "40 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $100,000". Meanwhile he also faces potential penalties tied to the other charges - including possession - with a maximum of "three years and six months....and a fine of up to $10,000". Meanwhile, his bail jumping charge could get him "six months of imprisonment and a fine of up to $10.000".
