Ancient Remains
The remains were found August 31st on the shore of Leech Lake near Gould Township, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office secured the site and after some investigation they found that the remains were several HUNDREDS of years old.
Cultural Sensitivity
This discovery prompted the Sheriff's Office to contact the Leech Lake Heritage Sites program and the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council. Steps were taken to secure the remains, and the incident remains under investigation.
Protecting Cultural Heritage
Authorities are not saying the exact location of the discovery, but say that the remains were found "within a known cultural site".
In a joint press release, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department, and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe remind the public that if they ever come across human remains, to call law enforcement and not to disturb the area around the discovery.
They say, "In doing so, this ensures vital evidence is preserved, along with being respectful of those who were here before us".
Serious Consequences
Disturbing these suspected cultural sites and/or cemeteries can result in some serious legal and civil penalties.
Respectful Restoration
Authorities say that they continue to work together to preserve and restore the found remains "to their original state in a timely and culturally appropriate manner."
