Ever since the Minnesota Department of Transportation started holding its annual "Name a Snowplow" contest a few years ago, I've found it pretty amusing.

I know I'm not the only one, as it has grown immensely in popularity since the first contest was held by MNDOT for the winter of 2020-2021.

The popularity has led to a number of other states, counties, and cities across the country jumping on the snow plow naming bandwagon in recent years. Even within Minnesota, local governments have tried their hand at the naming contest.

Duluth held just such a naming contest last fall, offering up a little prize package of sorts to the person who provided the winning name.

More popular than ever, MNDOT once again put the call out to Minnesotans for clever, creative, punny, and otherwise entertaining plow names; and I would argue they didn't disappoint!

MNDOT published this year's list of 50 finalists that are now up for vote, and there are some real gems this year! They whittled it down from over 7,300 submissions, and the top 50 are all pretty amazing!

A couple of my favorites include:

L’Plow du Nord: Clever play on the state motto, right?

867-530 Brine: Jenny, Jenny, who can I turn to (to get these roads plowed)?

Accumulus Removeus: One might consider this the scientific name for a plow truck.

De-Iceman Cometh: This just works on levels, and it would look great on the side of a plow looking to rid the road of ice and snow.

Oh Snow You Didn’t!: I mean...hahahaha

We’re Off To See The Blizzard: As any good snow plow should be.

Rudy GoBrrr: A good defensive piece for Minnesota's roads. Should be consistently better going on offense against snow than the similarly-named Timberwolves player is on the basketball court.

Plowin’ In The Wind: It checks a few boxes...Weather reference? Check. Minnesota celebrity reference? Check. Bob Dylan is topical these days after the Timothée Chalamet movie.

Lady Slippery: Another double-dip reference. Minnesota's state flower and an ice reference? Love it!

Chilly Eilish: I'm just a sucker for a clever play on a pop culture figure. I feel like Billie would approve.

Here's the list of all 50. Voting is open now through noon on Friday, February 7. You can vote once and select up to 8 names on the MNDOT Name a Snowplow website.
