One of the top topics of conversation in recent years has been the rising cost of groceries. These high prices have many shoppers looking for cheaper alternatives, especially compared to the stores that consistently rank among the most expensive in the country.

The website Cheapism recently compiled a list of the most expensive grocery stores in America. One store on that list, known for selling $36 packs of mushrooms, has several locations right here in Minnesota.

Where to Find Whole Foods in Minnesota

Whole Foods has a relatively small presence in Minnesota, with seven locations statewide, all in the Twin Cities metro area. Stores can be found in Woodbury, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, Edina, St. Paul, and two in Minneapolis. That’s more locations than any neighboring state.

What Makes It So Expensive?

Cheapism notes, “The grocery store chain is certified organic, and all its products are free from hydrogenated fats, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.” That might explain the $36 mushrooms, or other premium items like a $20 bottle of maple syrup.

The chain has even earned the nickname “Whole Paycheck,” thanks to its reputation for high prices. But those high food standards and eco-conscious practices clearly resonate with customers, many of whom remain loyal despite the sticker shock felt at any grocery store these days.
