I got a call yesterday that shocked me for good and bad reasons, but in the end, I'm glad they called.

The call came in the afternoon, and it certainly sent me into a mini panic to get to the source of their call and avoid a huge cost down the road.

The call came from Superior Water, Light and Power about increased water usage on our property, they said that they noticed our water usage more than doubled over the previous 24-hour period.

The representative from Superior Water, Light and Power then proceeded to give some common places to check for increased water usage, and the most common one was toilets. They gave the tip to put some food coloring in the tank of the toilet and see if any of that color made its way into the toilet bowl.

I do have a problem toilet in my house, and I immediately checked it, and that was the source of the increased water usage, so I quickly fixed the problem.

I have to say, I was impressed how quickly they spotted the problem and were able to notify us of the issue and get it resolved. This is all thanks to the upgrades they made to meters in Superior that now connect wirelessly and allow for real-time usage stats.

And while I'm appreciative that they called, I did have the thought, "wow, big brother is always watching." But if there is anything good from having continuous monitoring of utility usage, this would be it, as their call may have saved us hundreds of dollars when the next bill came around.
