Did You Get That Facebook Settlement Email Yet?
Last night, I was going through my personal email and noticed a somewhat suspicious-looking email from a DO NOT REPLY email address. Typically, I don't even open those, as they are generally junk emails that got through my filter. There was something about this email that made me open it, and I'm glad I did, as it was an actual legal notice that you'll want to be aware of.
Facebook User Privacy Settlement Agreement
The email was about a class action lawsuit against Facebook/Meta for "sharing or otherwise making accessible to third parties (including but not limited to third-party app developers, “whitelisted” parties, business partners, advertisers, and data brokers) user data and data about users’ friends without permission of the users whose data was shared, and did not sufficiently monitor and enforce third-party access or use of that data."
The actions occurred between May 2007 and December 2022. Facebook users were eligible to sign up for the class action lawsuit back in 2023, and it's taken until now for the disbursement of the funds, $725 million, to start to flow.
How Much Will You Get?
If you signed onto the class action lawsuit, chances are you are going to get some type of payment, but the amount is what people are wondering. I did some online digging and it seems that depending how long you were a user of Facebook would determine the amount you'll get.
One online article claims that if you were a user from 2007 through 2022, you'll be paid about $38. Others will get less, and the smallest payment will be around $4.
That's right, there are going to be millions of checks coming to people for $38.
Can You Still Sign Up For The Class Action Settlement?
No, the deadline was back in 2023 to sign up, but if you did and forgot about it like me, you'll want to make sure you see this email, letting you know you are going to be getting some money in the mail.
The email address you'll want to be looking for is: donotreply@facebookuserprivacysettlement.com
