I-35 Northbound Traffic Changes Start October 8
Get ready! The impacts to northbound traffic along I-35 are set to happen, in conjunction with the Twin Ports Interchange Project.
As road crews with the Minnesota Department of Transportation get ready to enter the next phase of work on the Can of Worms project, another major impact will happen for drivers. Last week, it was for the southbound lanes of I-35, moving from the usual interstate decking to Lower Michigan Street. Now, it's time for the shift in traffic patterns to happen for the north bound lanes of I-35.
According to details released by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, drivers can expect the northbound lanes of I-35 to shift to their new configuration on the existing southbound lanes. This set up will allow I-35 to have two lanes in each direction - both north and south bound - through the fall of 2022.
In addition to the movement of the northbound lanes to the existing southbound lanes of I-35, the following impacts tied to the Twin Ports Interchange project will also start on Friday, October 8:
- Northbound I-35 to southbound I-535 will close. The signed detour will follow the Highway 2 Bong Bridge
- The ramp from 27th Avenue West to northbound I-35 will close through October 15. The signed detour will follow I-35 south to 40th Avenue West and then back north
Once these traffic impacts are put into place, the traffic configuration on I-35 along the Twin Ports Interchange corridor should remain mostly static through the winter season in long into next summers road construction season. The closures and movements are necessary in order to allow work crews access to the roadways in order to demolish and rebuild the Can of Worms intersection.
