Split Rock Lighthouse To Hold Annual Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial On November 10
November is right around the corner, which for many means that fall is here and Thanksgiving is near. In our neck of the woods, November takes on a different meaning to most.
Split Rock Lighthouse is once again holding their annual memorial to the Edmund Fitzgerald. This tradition honors those that were aboard the freighter on the Great Lakes and lost their lives, along with others who have died at the hands of the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald: A Great Lakes Memorial will do just that on the anniversary of the shipwreck, which is November 10th. This year, the anniversary falls on a Tuesday.
This year will mark the 51st anniversary, meaning it has been half a century since the wreck. All twenty-nine men aboard the freighter died when the ship sank about seventeen miles from Whitefish Point in Michigan.

Beginning at 4:15 p.m., Split Rock will close temporarily for a rendition of the naval hymn. Following the hymn, the names of all the crew members lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald will be read to the tolling of a ship's bell.

The lighthouse will reopen to visitors again until about 6 p.m. If you can't make it in person, the event will be streamed on Split Rock's official Facebook page and on the Minnesota Historical Society's YouTube channel.

On this day, attendees can watch a film about the freighter in the visitor center or attend a guided tour which goes through the history of the ship's last sail. Doing either of these things is incredible on any given day, but all the more meaningful on the anniversary of the wreck.
The Edmund Fitzgerald fell victim to a severe storm with massive waves and unbearable winds. It currently sits on the bottom of the floor of Lake Superior.
