Volunteers Come Together To Take Veterans Fishing On Lake Superior

Local volunteers are honoring our veterans with another fun day on Lake Superior. It's called Vets On The Lake, and it's coming up on July 27th.

The Western Lake Superior Trollers Association is hosting the event, and I talked with Jim VandLandschoot who is one of the organizers. Jim says they hope to bring out 120 veterans fishing on Lake Superior this year. He said it's all made possible by volunteers who give up their time and their normal day of charter fishing to give the veterans a good time.

The fishing takes place from about 7 am-2 pm on Lake Superior, and it ends with a fish fry for the veterans back at Barker's Island in Superior.

Last year they had 50 boats volunteer to take out veterans. They ended the day with about 250 people at the fish fry.

How can veterans get on the list to fish?

Minnesota veterans who are interested in participating can contact MAC-V at 218-722-8763 to get on the list. Wisconsin veterans should contact the Douglas County Veterans Office at 715-395-1331.

Thanks to all the volunteers who make this possible. Many of these volunteers give up a day where they could be making hundreds of dollars doing charter services, but instead donate their time to honor these veterans.
