While I thoroughly enjoy college and professional sports, there's something to be said about showing up to support and cheer on young people as they learn the game and play purely for the love of the sport.

An inaugural event coming to the Twin Ports area will give members of the public the opportunity to do just that - show up and cheer on young athletes playing a game they love, all at a unique venue.

The team at the car dealership Duluth Dodge just announced a new charitable event they plan to make into an annual tradition that they are calling "Hoops and Horsepower", which is happening at the dealership this weekend.

The dealership's general manager, Burleigh Randolph, started the event with the goal of putting a spotlight on youth basketball. He commented, “We wanted to find more ways to give back to the community that supports us. What better way than to shine a light on this incredible youth program?”

The inaugural Hoops and Horsepower event will welcome youth basketball players from the Duluth area's Salvation Army Rookie Basketball Association to play basketball on the showroom floor at Duluth Dodge this weekend. The event is the kickoff to the RBA's 2025-2026 basketball season.

In an event posting for Hoops and Horsepower, organizers welcome the public to "bring your family and friends to cheer on these future stars together!"

The event is also being billed as a fundraiser for the Rookie Basketball Association and Salvation Army, so it is an event you can go to have fun at while also helping out some good local causes in the process!

The showroom floor at Duluth Dodge will be converted into a basketball court, with game action scheduled for this Saturday, September 13, from 11 am to 1 pm.

There will be a girls' game, boys' game, free-throw contest, and layup competition during the afternoon. The schedule is as follows:

  • 11:00 a.m. – Girls’ Rookie Basketball Game
  • 11:45 a.m. – Layup Competition and Free Throw Contest (all players)
  • 12:15 p.m. – Boys’ Rookie Basketball Game

A post from the Duluth Salvation Army highlights that there will be food on site, so you can make plans to not only catch some basketball and cheer on these young basketball players, but also enjoy lunch on Saturday.

13 Places a Duluthian Would Be Ashamed to Admit They've Never Been

For anyone who has lived in Duluth for longer than a week, there are certain things you'd be afraid to admit you've never done or places you've never been to be considered a true local.
