Duluth Police Highlight Spike In Traffic Stops While Unveiling New Data Tool
The Duluth Police Department recently highlighted a considerable spike in traffic stops as they shared a new public data portal about traffic stop data.
In a recent social media post, Duluth Police pointed to a 64% increase in traffic stops in the first quarter of 2025 when compared to the same three-month period in 2024.
The Duluth Police Department started gathering traffic stop data into a database in the Fall of 2021, and they have now made this data publicly available.
Looking at traffic stop numbers in the first three months of each year since 2021, numbers have been as low as 1,423 in 2022 to as high as 1,824 in 2023. The Q1 2025 numbers show a significant spike, with 2,370 stops being reported.

The main reason cited for these traffic stops is moving violations (60.63%), with equipment violations making up most of the remaining reasons for a stop (36.12%). The remaining stops (3.25%) were due to suspicious activity.
The Duluth Police Department announced that they are making this traffic stop data publicly available as a part ot their "commitment to building trust through transparency with our community."
Data made available in this new portal includes the reasons for traffic stops, actions taken, whether or not a search was conducted, whether items were located, the source of the call (if any), and demographic data like perceived race and perceived gender.
Also included in the data is a map of where each traffic stop occurred, and can be filled by year, quarter, reasons for a stop, or any of the above-mentioned data categories.
