The Minnesota Vikings held a press conference on Tuesday morning. During the conference, head coach Mike Zimmer announced that special teams coordinator Marwan Maalouf's contract has expired following the 2020 season, and they will not be renewing it.

Marwan Maalouf was hired as the special teams coordinator in 2019. He previously was an assistant special teams coach for the Miami Dolphins from 2013-2018. Before that he was the special teams coordinator for the Colts. He also held roles in special teams coaching for the Baltimore Ravens, and Cleveland Browns.

Special teams have been a problem for the Minnesota Vikings. Missed field goals have plagued Vikings kickers for several years. Dan Bailey was one of the most accurate NFL field goal kickers until recently, where he's struggled on the field. According to Fox Sports, he had a career low 68.2% of field goal attempts. He also only made 86% of his extra point kicks. The low point this season was after he missed four kicks in the loss to Tampa Bay in December, when the Vikings were still in the playoff hunt.

Besides problems scoring points, the special teams kick returns were in last place in the NFL with only 4.3 yards per attempted return. In kickoff returns the Vikings average 21.9 yards per attempt which ranks 16th in the NFL.

There are many questions for the Vikings in the offseason after having a disappointing season. They finished 7-9 after an atrocious start to the difficult 2020 season. Much of the issues came from the defense which suffered many injuries. The offense seemed to find it's stride by the bye week and ended up scoring the third most points in team history. But it wasn't enough to make this team viable in the end.
