The verdict is in:  The Minnesota Department of Transportation has finished counting the votes and they have announced the winners of their 2022 edition of their Name A Snowplow Contest.

With nearly 60,000 votes cast in the process, the transportation agency has determined what names will apply to each of the eight districts across the state - joining the winners from last years contest.  The voting came after 22,000 "name ideas" were submitted during an earlier portion of the contest.

This years winning names are creative - just like last years. Like many popularity contests, they also seem to mirror current trends and events - especially with one name in particular.

Here are the winning names - with our local district (District 1) listed first:

  • No More Mr. Ice Guy - District 1

  • The Big Leplowski - District 4
  • Plowasaurus Rex - Metro District
  • Scoop Dogg - District 3
  • Blizzard of Oz - District 2
  • Edward Blizzardhands - District 6

With 40,024 votes,  the "Betty Whiteout" was the  top vote getter - no doubt an acknowledgement to the legendary actresses recent death that occurred while votes were being cast.

Here are some other names that garnered big enough vote totals to register towards the top of the list - albeit not in the winning positions:

  • Sir Plows-A-Lot
  • Catch My Drift
  • Sled Zeppeli
  • Lord Coldemort
  • C-3PSnow
  • Giiwedin (Ojibwe word for 'North Wind')

The 2022 snowplow contest winning names will join the winning snowplow names from last year in MNDOT's fleet.  As a refresher, here are those winning names from 2021:

  • Duck Duck Orange Duck - District 1
  • Plowy McPlowFace - Metro District
  • Ope, Just Gonna Plow Right Past Ya - District 4
  • Plow Bunyan - District 2

  • F. Salt Fitzgerald - District 7
  • Darth Blader - District 3
  • The Truck Formerly Known As Plow - District 8

It's worth noting that the overall number of voters this year (2022) was significantly less that last year (2021).  During the 2021 name a snowplow contest, MNDOT registered 122,435 unique voters; this years contest (2022) - saw only 59,655 unique voters.
