The University of Wisconsin-Superior made a huge announcement today about a new addition coming to the campus in 2023.

The University in partnership with Superior Choice Credit Union says that they plan to build a new sports stadium and have it open by September 2023, it will be the home of Yellowjacket men's and women's soccer teams and the men's and women's outdoor track and field teams, it will also "benefit academic courses, campus intramurals, and the Superior community at large."

The new stadium will be called Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium, along with buying the naming rights to the new stadium, Superior Choice Credit Union will also get the naming rights to the standing and lounge area at Wessman Arena, which was previously known as the Yellowjacket Room.

The new stadium will be located next to Marcovich Wellness Center on land that is currently a parking lot, a grass practice field, and the unused Ole Haugsrud Stadium. The grandstand located at Ole Haugsrud Stadium will be torn down to make room for the new stadium. Construction on the new stadium will start in the spring of 2023.

UW-Superior Director of Athletics Nick Bursik says, "This project will mark one of the largest investments we've made into our outdoor facilities over the past several decades. We pride ourselves on offering a high-quality student-athlete experience, and this new stadium will further evaluate our abilities to support our student-athletes and enhance the visibility and profile of our university."

Last month we reported on the possibility of this happening, and in that article, some details were given about what this current stadium project might look like, "UWS officials seek to redevelop or re-use that field, potentially including an indoor turf field. They're also seeking ways to incorporate retail, housing, and perhaps a hotel." No further details about the project were given, so stay tuned.
