The Pokegama River will more easily accessed starting next summer. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration has awarded a $128,482 grant to the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve. They've partnered with the City of Superior to help improve various projects in the St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail.

The improvements will include a dock and motorized boat launch pad, better parking area, a kayak and canoe launch access, and new signage. The City of Superior is also providing $50,000 for vault restrooms and garbage and recycling cans. There also will be improvements to the road to reduce erosion of clay into the river.

The launch is located in the Superior Municipal Forest, which is managed by the City of Superior. Director of Parks, Recreation and Forestry Linda Cadotte is appreciative of the funds and effort,

"I cannot express enough the gratitude of partnerships. The need, concepts, design, and ultimately the implementation of an important access improvement project like this would not be possible without the feedback from the stakeholders and funding support.”

Many groups came together to support this proposal including the Douglas County Fish and Game League, St. Louis River Alliance, and Northland Paddlers Alliance. The improved access to the Pokegama Bay will help groups such as paddlers, fisherman, duck hunters, fisherman, and the community in general.

The St. Louis River Estuary is part of the UW-Madison Division of Extension. UW-Superior locally works as part of the program and is led by the National oceanic and Atomspheric Administration.
