With all of the drama in Green Bay over the situation between the Packers and Aaron Rodgers, the team is shoring up the roster at the quarterback position with a move Wednesday afternoon.

After reports surfaced earlier in the day on Wednesday that Green Bay was interested in Blake Bortles, reports say the Packers are locking him down to a deal.

News initially popped up when Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Packers beat reporter Tom Silverstein tweeted that Green Bay was interested in Bortles Wednesday afternoon. With Rodgers signaling he won't be taking part in phase 2 of team offseason activities next week, the need to add some depth at the position is a sudden need for the Packers. Coming into the day, Jordan Love is the only quarterback on roster that would be at team workouts.

While that is the case, Silverstein stated in a subsequent tweet that signing Bortles "would have little to do with the Rodgers situation", saying Packers GM Brian Gutekunst wanted to add a veteran quarterback before OTAs.

Within less than an hour, Adam Schefter confirmed that Green Bay would be signing Bortles according to one of his sources.

Silverstein suggested in a subsequent tweet that Bortles is a good fit among available options because of the relationship he has with Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Bortles played under Hackett for four seasons with the Jaguars. The first two of those years Hackett was Bortles's quarterbacks coach, and the second two the offensive coordinator.

NBC Sports also says free agents Chad Kelly and Kurt Benkert will try out with the team as well.

For a quick history lesson, Blake Bortles was drafted third overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2014 NFL Draft - the same draft class as Johnny Manziel (Browns), Teddy Bridgewater (Vikings), and Derek Carr (Raiders).

Bortles played four seasons in Jacksonville before finding himself backing up Jared Goff for the Rams in 2019. Following his one-year stint with the Rams, he was signed by the Denver Broncos after their starter Drew Lock got injured. He was released in October, then brought back to join the practice squad in Denver.

With Rodgers and the Packers digging in their heels, it is hard to say who will take first team snaps in spring offseason activities. Jordan Love has more familiarity with the offense, but has no snaps in a regular season NFL game. Bortles, on the other hand, has far more game experience, though he is a fresh addition to the team.
