It's almost that time of year again.  As the snow melts and the temperature warms up, many turn their attention towards spring clean up - that annual practice of getting ride of the unwanted items that clutter the basement and garage.

Some of those items might be a little too big for the weekly garbage collection dumpster or they might not normally be accepted by the city garbage crew.  To accommodate those items, the City of Superior started doing an annual citywide spring clean up collection. The schedule usually runs about four weeks and covers the entire city one neighborhood at a time.

The dates for the 2022 annual spring clean up have been announced.  This year the event starts May 2 and will wrap up by May 27. The detailed schedule of what neighborhood the crews will pick up from on each day are available on the City of Superior's website. This year they've also provided an interactive, full color map that allows you to click on your neighborhood and the graphic will tell you exactly what date they'll be collecting the trash there.

While the spring clean up in Superior is a great chance to get rid of those larger items that you usually can't fit in the dumpster, there are still some stipulations and reminders that residents should be aware of:

  • All eligible items must be available for pickup by 7:00 AM on the scheduled day for that neighborhood
  • Items not in place by 7:00 AM on that scheduled day risk the chance of being left behind by the city collection crews as they work to complete their pickup
  • Don't place items out too early.  The City of Superior asks that you don't place items out for the spring clean up more than one week before your scheduled date.

Items for the spring clean up should be placed on the ground near where your dumpster normally goes for the weekly garbage collection.

While all non-hazardous items will be accepted for the clean up, the city does ask residents to use discretion.  "Before disposing of items....consider donating them to keep them out of the landfill.  There are a number of charities that accept clothing and household items".

Here are the items that the city will not accept as part of the spring clean up event:

  • Mattresses
  • Box springs
  • Recyclables
  • Tires
  • Hazardous liquids
  • Asbestos containing materials
  • TV's
  • Appliances
  • Computers
  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Motor oil
  • Car batteries

Residents who have items on the list of items not accepted for the spring clean up event have options available to them; the city details the proper ways that these items can be disposed of - with options - on their website.
