The efforts to bring lower-cost, faster broadband service to Superior advances under the program name Connect Superior.  Organizers of the effort will hold an Open House to showcase their progress so far in Thursday, June 17 at the Superior Public Library; two different event times will be held to accommodate busy schedules - one at 12:00 PM (Noon) and another at 7:00 PM.

With the Connect Superior plan, city and community leaders are investigating the possibility of a community-owned fiber-optic network; proponents of the plan offer that such a system would bring "more speed, more affordability, and more reliability" for customers.

On their website, Connect Superior offers the following goals that they're working towards advancing:

  • Lower the cost of internet access by 30% for both residents and businesses.
  • Significantly increase the speed and reliability of internet access.
  • Increase competition and give residents multiple options for ISPs on demand in real time.
  • Build a state-of-the-art network that will improve economic development and foster innovation.
  • Leverage the network to improve the services provided in  the city including public safety, transportation, healthcare, education, emergency communications, and new services that will become possible with advanced network infrastructure.

In addition to these goals, the organizers are also promoting the following "principals and objectives":

  • Nobody will be forced to participate. Participation would be on a voluntary, opt-in basis.
  • Taxes would not be increased to fund the network.
  • The ongoing operation of the network would be self-sustaining and not dependent on any kind of subsidy from the City of Superior.

Invitation to the Open House event(s) are being directed to the general public.  There is no admission charge.
