The Minnesota Medical Association said today that the state should consider mandating the wearing of masks in public places.

The MMA along with 20 other state medical societies representing more than 10,000 physicians and physicians-in-training is urging public and private leaders in the state to require face masks or face coverings to help control the spread of COVID-19.

15 other states across the country are requiring mandatory face masks when out in public and the MMA would like to see Minnesota added to the list.

"The medical benefits of wearing a mask are clear – a mask helps reduce virus transmission, particularly by individuals who are sick but have no symptoms and by individuals who have been infected but do not yet show any symptoms. Masks are also safe to wear,” said Keith Stelter, MD, president of the Minnesota Medical Association in a press release today.

The MMA would like to see "no shirt, no shoes, no mask, no service" at every public and private location in the state.

“Statewide use of masks now in all indoor settings and on public transportation can help Minnesota avoid the resurgence of cases that is happening in many other states and avoid a backwards turn of the dial,” said Stelter.

The following states already require face masks or face coverings in public, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and the District of Columbia.
