Vidalia Onion Recall Details For Minnesota, Wisconsin + Sam’s Club, Sold Under ‘Little Bear’ Brand Name
Just in time for the summer barbecue season comes this recall on a popular grilled burger mate: A&M Farms has issued a voluntary recall on a specific batch of their Vidalia onions. The concern is the potential for contamination with Listeria Monocytogenes.
The onions in question are sold in bulk at grocery stores under the Little Bear brand at a variety of grocery stores. Additionally, six-pound bags of the recalled onions were "shipped to [a] Sam's Club distribution center", but "[a]ccording to Sam's, all recalled onions were destroyed and unavailable for sale to consumers".
According to details shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Little Bear branded Vidalia onions were packed on a specific packing line between June 20 and June 23, 2022. Customers are instructed to look for the sticker that would be attached to the outer skin of the onions.
- The recalled Little Bear Vidalia onions sold by the pound would say "PLU 4159"
- The recalled Little Bear Vidalia onions sold in six-pound bags would have be marked with "LOT #CHW032A" and have a UPC number of "UPC026303610067"
The recall was initiated after an internal company test detected Listeria on product coming from the one specific line in question. The FDA shared that "[a]lthough the company cleans and sanitizes its pack lines regularly, it is recalling onions packed on the implicated packing line before and after June 21 out of an abundance of caution". It's worth noting that "no other products grown, packed, or sold by A&M Farms are affected by this recall".
Here are images of both the bulk Little Bear onions as well as the pre-packaged six-pound bag as sold at Sam's Club:
To date there have been no known medical illness reports associated with the recalled Vidalia onions. However, Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems".
Customers who have the recalled onions in their possession are urged not to consume them. Questions can be directed at the company's hotline: 1-912-585-2058.
