Getting tested for COVID-19 just got a little less complicated for Wisconsin residents.  The saliva-based testing for the virus that became available at the DECC about a month ago is now open to Wisconsin residents.  The tests are free of charge.

Previous to this announcement, the tests were available only to Minnesota residents.  According to news sources, the "states of Minnesota and Wisconsin entered into an agreement allowing this [new availability for everyone]". The change went into effect as of October 29.

While no formal appointments are needed to use the free salivia-based testiing facility at the DECC, they are encouraged to help staff minimize wait times and prioritize scheduling.  In order to be tested, there are some guidelines to follow:

  • Those being tested need to refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum for at least 30 minutes prior to the test
  • Participants will need to spit into a small vial, so hydrating ahead of time is prudent.  However, be mindful of the need to be 30 minutes free from consuming the liquid of choice.
  • A smartphone is needed (if they have one)
  • Bring your insurance card/ID so that the state can bill insurance for reimbursement.  However, if you don't have insurance, you can still participate free of charge; the state would cover those charges.

The saliva-based COVID-19 testing site at the DECC in Duluth is one of seven active testing points throughout the state of Minnesota.  The other locations include Brooklyn Park, Mankato, Moorhead, St. Cloud, St. Paul, and Winona.
