There will be a new feature this year that helps people that can't make it to Duluth to cheer on their family member or loved one during the race.

At mile 24 in Grandma's Marathon or mile 11 during the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, when the runners cross the timing line, it will trigger any video messages left for them and play them as they run past the screen. The location is right around the Portland Malt Shop.

Originally Grandma's Marathon came up with this feature because there wasn't going to be any spectators, so this seemed to be a good way everyone could leave a message. Things have changed, people can watch the race, but there are family and friends around the world that want to be a part of the race and this is a great idea that will impact runners at the perfect time.

When runners get to that part of the race, it looks like they have a long way to go and this message center will inspire them hopefully. When I spoke to Zach Scheider from Grandma's Marathon, he said the idea might have started with COVID in mind, but still works for anyone. He said they don't have to be in other parts of the country or world, it can be family here in the Twin Ports. It's a great way to become part of the race and cheer on family and friends.
