The Minnesota State High School League has announced that competitions may resume for winter sports and activities beginning January 14, 2021. The Minnesota Department of Health has updated information for COVID-19 Youth and Adults Sports that included documentation on sports guidance. The MSHSL will adapt a flexible model based on the information moving forward this winter.

The board of directors has approved the winter season model that will be used for winter sports and activities under the sponsorship of MSHSL. Practices may begin on January 4, and competitions can resume on January 14. MSHSL Executive Director Erich Martins knows how eager students have been to resume sports, and believes this model and protocols will enable a successful season,

“By implementing these safety protocols recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and required by the Minnesota Department of Health, we have the best chance to provide safe seasons with reduced interruptions and also plan for full postseason experiences.”

The Minnesota Department of Health document for youth sports requires mask usage by all participants during practices and competitions. There are a few exceptions for sports where it would create a safety concern such a gymnastics, swimming, diving, and cheerleading.

The MSHSL will continue to work directly with the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Department of Education in the return of youth sports. The league promises to continuously review the latest information and existing documents for an update on sports specific guidance to come mid week.
