Aerial Lift Bridge Reduced To One Lane For Maintenance Work – February 22-25
Some out-of-season maintenance work on the Aerial Lift Bridge will reduce traffic to one lane and spur a traffic signal situation for the Canal Park landmark during daylight hours. There will also be delays anticipated due to the lifts needed for the repairs. The City of Duluth will be on site performing the maintenance Monday, February 22 through Thursday, February 25.
According to project details released by the city, the work will occur during daylight hours only. The times listed for the lane-closure are 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Work crews with the city will be working ten hour shifts to complete the job a quickly as possible to minimize the number of disruptions to the neighborhood. Even in the off-season, the Aerial Lift Bridge sees a lot of daily traffic.
Traffic flow on the Aerial Lift Bridge will be controlled by traffic lights onsite during the work, due to the one, single-lane configuration necessary in order to complete the maintenance. Contractors working on the bridge required it to be in a raised positions for twenty minutes at a time. After each twenty minute period where the bridge is in a raised position, the bridge will be lowered and restored for fifteen to twenty minutes before being lifted for another twenty minutes again.
The City of Duluth is reporting that sidewalks will remain open while the work is being done on the bridge. Officials don't anticipate the work taking longer than the four days planned.
