The month of July will be filled with lane closures and orange cones for drivers who take the Blatnik Bridge as part of their daily commute.  The Minnesota Department of Transportation is alerting drivers to routine inspections for the bridge on July 6 through July 23. Motorists can expect to find right-hand lane closures and reduced speeds during those dates - between 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM, Monday through Thursday.

According to details released by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the inspection crews will start on one side of the bridge and then move to the other. Bridge inspections on the Blatnik Bridge will start on the eastbound side - the side that heads towards Superior, and then eventually transition to the westbound side - the side that heads towards Duluth.

During the bridge inspections, traffic will be slowed down.  The posted speed limit for this construction zone will be 45 mph.

For the time being - as the COVID-19 Pandemic response is in place, MNDOT is working hard to adhere to Governor Tim Walz's Stay at Home executive order. Road work has been identified as a Critical Service by the state and will continue on.

Here are some important reminders from MNDOT about safety in regards to this specific project as well as any of the projects you might encounter this summer:

  • Slow down when approaching a work zone
  • Use caution when navigating through the marked-off work area
  • Stay alert - work zones constantly change
  • Watch for workers and slow moving equipment
  • Obey the posted speed limits. Fine for a violation in a work zone is $300
  • Minimize distractions behind the wheel
  • Be patient
  • Expect delays - especially during peak travel times
