The summer road construction season is here.  If you're keeping track at home (and I know many of you are), the Minnesota Department of Transportation has released a preview of all of the projects you can expect to see around the state this summer.  In all, MNDOT will undertake 188 road and bridge projects throughout the state before the season ends in late October; some of them have already started and proceeding ahead of schedule due to the lighter-than-usual traffic in the face of the COVID-19 Pandemic. MNDOT will also participate in an additional 66 projects that fall outside of their jurisdiction - primarily improvements around airports, ports, transit, and railroads.

To summarize the state-wide impact, drivers can expect to see a couple of major work zones inside the Twin Cities metro; one specific project - the work along Highway 5 near the Minneapolis International Airport - is anticipated to create delays of an hour or more.

Closer to home, here are the major road projects MNDOT will work on this summer:

  • Highway 61/Grand Marais:  MNDOT will work to reconstruct and resurface Highway 61 from Cutface Creek to Highway 14 through Grand Marais - including accessibility and drainage improvements.
  • Highway 61/Grand Portage:  The Minnesota Department of Transportation will resurface Highway 61 from Reservation Bay Road to the Canadian border.
  • Highway 53/11 - International Falls:  MNDOT will reconstruct Highway 53 from Crescent Drive to 4th Street and Highway 11 from Highway 71 to Highway 53 in International Falls.

MNDOT keeps an up-to-date resource page on all of their road projects; click here to visit the online project page - which has an aggressive search feature.
